On our way to the Kuang Si falls, the tuk-tuk dropped us in a village so that we would buy some arts and crafts, and it happened to be the new year. This explains the nice dresses.

Every morning, gardeners walk up and down to collect water in their cans for their lettuces, cabbages, carrots and so on.

Tomorrow is the king's birthday. He will be 80. The festivities promise to be impressive and all over the country. Bhumibol's hold over Thai public opinion was demonstrated following the 2003 Phnom Penh riots in Cambodia, when hundreds of Thai protesters, enraged by the burning of the Thai embassy in Phnom Penh, gathered outside the Cambodian embassy in Bangkok, ripped the Cambodian seal out of the front wall, and tried to break into the embassy. The situation was resolved peacefully when Police General Sant Sarutanonda told the crowd that he had received a call from royal secretary Arsa Sarasin conveying Bhumibol's request for calm. Up in the pagodas there were all kinds of different buddhas, small and big. People buy gold leaf that they stick on the statues.

We got to know Ari who started helping Helene to learn the Thai characters. Here Helene is sitting on the side of the street, and while she was waiting for us and she started working. A passerby stopped to compliment her also! Dans la rue, en train de nous attendre, Helene en a profite pour copier les caracteres Thailandais. Un passant s'est arrete pour la feliciter..
Notre pension a Bangkok
est tres confortable. Il y a des orchidees et des poissons (dans des aquariums) partout!

Il s'agit d'un sac de papier a l'envers, avec du combustible dessous. Il suffit de le tenir jusqu'a ce qu'il s'envole!
Samedi soir
C'etait une grosse fete et tout le monde etait dans la rue. On pouvait acheter des gateaux de fleurs flottants. On nous a explique que le but etait l'expression de la gratitude. Alors nous avons achete notre bateau, allume l'encens et la bougie et mis a l'eau!

J'ai un gros rhume. Alors on m'a recommande (une irlandaise) un medecin tibétain. Et j'ai des boules de plantes a manger avant et apres chaque repas. Elle m'a aussi dit qu'il faisait froid et qu'il fallait que je me couvre. C'est au moins la 10ème personne à me le dire. Il ne fait que vingt degrés environ... I had a big cold, went to the tibetan doctor, and now I have medicines to take. Here is the pharmacist. I am also supposed to wear long sleeves, but I didn't take any with me when I left!
